Rediscovering a Pen Love Affair

Today, I contracted an old itch. I have long had a love affair with quality writing utensils and when I looked over today and saw one of the doctors at internship writing progress notes with a shiny Waterman fountain pen, I felt a pang of chewed-Papermate-ballpoint shame.

There is something seriously addictive about the perfect pen, and in an age when handwritten is pretty infrequent for the day to day things like datebooks (iCal/Outlook), check writing (what’s that???), and communication (can haz email?), it’s easy for me to forget the feeling of scrawling on a clean piece of paper with high quality pen.

I couldn’t find either of my Waterman fountain pens when I got home, but I did find my two disposable Pilot Varsity fountain pens and it’s enough of a quality boost to have me scrambling to find things to scribble on. My handwriting changes, the pen just glides over the blank page, and regardless of what I’ve just written, it feels three times as important in a beautiful, scrawling fountain pen script.

I’m glad I remembered the importance of a good pen while I’m on such an enthusiastic scribble-blogging kick. :)

Scribblings - March 1-3

Quick note for those of you who weren’t reading when I started scribbling - I don’t keep a handwritten datebook for my actual appointments (hello, why would I need a datebook with iCal + iPhone?), but I still love scribbling on paper and have found that it’s a fun way to blog, since a handwritten note is a bit more personal (and fun to create), so I keep an after-the-fact diary-ish datebook instead, and that’s where the scribbles come from.

That said, here’s March 1st:

On March 2nd, I filmed STeaP and went out to dinner and to Starbucks with Kate:

And Monday:

Scribble - Pot Holes

Scribble - Pot Holes, originally uploaded by Brandice.net.

It’s true, I’m not kidding around. The big bottomless potholes on really high bridges should be the first ones to get fixed. What if I dropped a pen out of my car window and it fell through the hole and with increasing velocity it impaled itself in the head of an innocent sidewalk strutter far below me?

Well, that probably wouldn’t happen. But still.
