My first counseling session
me couch
[info]misfitmonkey
...I had to post about my first counseling session yesterday. :) My internship supervisor hasn't been able to give me experience or shadowing opportunites in clinical / behavior therapy up until recently, but last week she decided to give me one of her clients and I'm getting three clients from a woman who's going on maternity leave as well, that I'll be following up with when I return in January. Two client will be phone counseling / checking up, but the other two are in-house counseling, which I've NEVER done.

It was difficult for me, because the client isn't very talkative, but I got through it, and when I was walking the client out to the lobby, he looked at me and said, "So, I'll see *you* next time, right?" Which of course made me unbelievably happy, and then I had my semester student review with my supervisor, which went INCREDIBLY well. She said that she'd heard really good things about my ability to interact naturally with the variety of disabled clients that the agency deals with, and she was impressed with how much I'd gotten out of the client who'd just left, when he barely talks during a typical session and usually takes longer to warm up to new people.

I left internship yesterday feeling really great about my decision to get my masters degree, because with an LiSW, I will be doing *exactly* what I want to be doing professionally, and now I know that I at least have good base skills to build on and a good feel for how to work with MRDD clients. :) Yay me!

Food Reviews

[info]misfitmonkey
So, I'm eating healthy (again). (It's an ongoing saga, she's eats like shit, she feels like shit, she starts eating healthy, she feels healthy, she wants a cheeseburger, she eats like shit, she feels like shit, and now she's eating healthy again.)

Current staples in the diet:
Uncle Ben's Ready Rice - Ready in 90 Seconds (Perfect for someone on the run who hates re-heated rice
Emerald Dry Roasted Almonds (So tasty!!)
Mrs. May's Naturals Cashew Crunch (these are highly tasty cashew clusters with very light natural sweetening, taste very snacky, but very good for you)
Del Monte Lite Sliced Peaches (I buy the cans and drain the lite syrup)
Dannon Lite 'n Fit Yogurt (I don't eat this all the time, but I like it as a switch up option with lunch)
Luna Bars (holy god, the Chocolate Peppermint Stick is absolutely awesome and delicious and doesn't even taste remotely like healthy food... plain yummy!)
Cottage Cheese / Sharp Cheddar & Triscuits (I'm a cheese nut in general, I always either have my cheese/crackers or some cottage cheese)
Spiru-Tein Protein Shake - Vanilla (I got it for $15 at Rite Aid, should last quite a while, and it doesn't taste like crap. Good with orange juice and milk so far!)

Those are the highlights as far as snacking and quick eating go. Bub and I got a lot of chicken, ground pork and beef, tortillas, milk, mini-wheats for me :), and I have some other things I want to check out, but those are some things I've found that I think will keep me in the healthy eating phase permanently. It's so much easier to eat healthy when I can feel like I'm just eating normally and not missing anything.

Thanks to Kelley for endless advice. :)

ABSOLUTELY CRUCIAL QUOTES TO REMEMBER FROM THIS EVENING:
"Oh, I had reconstructive foot surgery. I'll never walk again." Hostess, while walking a couple to their table at Eat N Park.

"Could we please not break our thumbs or have a heart attack during Nanowrimo? Those are two things you Municipal Liaison is NOT responsible for!" - Me, after Dianah nearly breaks her thumb engaging in thumb war instread of word wars

"I am NOT a licensed physician! I am here to encourage you!" - Me, after Dianah protests the above statement

And this is entirely inappropriate and I do not apologize:
"You don't have to let a gorilla rip your arms off and f*** you with them..." - Me, to Jane

"...but you should.“ Dianah and myself, in unison

I am seriously not kidding about what the hostess said about being crippled, WHILE WALKING. We're fairly certain that she was high on crystal meth. I may have been kidding about the gorilla though. I probably was.

Today's Word Count: 17,186

Random Excerpt:
Jackie had forgotten she'd gone over to take a peek in the mystery closet. She turned and open the door the rest of the way and pulled the rusty chain that was swinging slightly in front of her.

What she saw when the old bulb flickered to life was a large bassett hound with a rhinestone collar and a very displeased look on his face, as if they were supposed to open the door much sooner than they had.

While Jackie stood there with an absolutely dumbfounded look on her face, the dog trudged slowly out of the closet, wandered over to the foot of the bed and plunked himself down on the floor, his long ears flopping out to the side and spreading out over the floor like wings.

Molly turned around, charcoal pencil in hand. "What's ... WOAH. Dog."

Jackie's face remained transfixed on the dog. "Yep. Dog."

One might expect that to be the most surprising part of this scenario was the dog walking out of a closet that had been closed for who knows how long (and there were no droppings in the closet of any smelly sort), but the most surprising part was probably what happened next.

The dog raised his head with what looked like a very annoyed expression on his face and he said, "YES. Dog."

Things are going pretty well, and I'm definitely not done for the night. :) Woohoo!

Ohio (and National) Election Results
me couch
[info]misfitmonkey
Ohio, I am so fucking proud of you today. :) This is the first time I've ever felt this completely excited about how well an election has gone. The Democrats have taken the House, and it looks like (as long as we really win Montana and Virginia, which is looking good right now), we're going to win the Senate, not to mention the first female Speaker of the House (Nancy Pelosi), North Dakota abortion ban being overturned, Smoke Free Ohio passing, minimum wage was increased in Ohio, and most importantly of all, Ohio turned bright Democrat blue yesterday with the defeat of the psychotic Mike DeWine and neurotically unstable Kenneth Blackwell in the Senate and Governor seats (not to mention, a Democrat win of a majority of the state and local offices!).

Today is a perfect example of what can happen when people *don't* subscribe to the pessimistic view that our votes don't count, because we overturned years of Republican leadership in Ohio and the Federal Congress yesterday BY VOTING. We put into effect propositions making public air clear of cancerous tobacco, we raised the minimum wage, and we put better people in office, both locally and nationally.

I'm really hopeful about the future of my country today and I haven't been able to say that in a long time. It's not a sign that we'll have miracles or that everything will now be fixed, but it's a huge step, and I'm glad I helped take it.

Any Mr. and Mrs. Non-Voters, I don't wanna hear a WORD out of any of you about the state of our nation until the next election. I'm already hearing grumbling about the smoking ban and who was elected, and three out of four of the people who grumbled to me this morning didn't vote, so I promptly told them to can it. VOTE OR SHUSH.

Voting Day - Your Ass Better Have Voted

I'm really saddened by the number of people in my age group that didn't vote and have this scary indifference to what happens today. Some don't even know the issues or the candidates, and my state (Ohio) is a very important state, with a lot of weight. I hope that MOST of you voted and know how important it is to have a voice, even when it doesn't come with immediate rewards like instant political change or policy change, etc. Those of you who voted, ROCK.

2. IN ORDER TO CATCH THE REPUBLICANS STEALING YOUR VOTE, YOU FIRST HAVE TO VOTE. There are huge and valid concerns about the new electronic voting machines that must be addressed. It is far too easy to use new technology to rig the vote. But if your fear of that leads you to decide that you shouldn't bother voting, well, then, I guess they've succeeded in snuffing out your voice without having to rig the machine. Make them break the law if they want to win. Vote. We'll catch them if they do. I promise.

Title: DO OVER: The Education and Adventures of the Already Perished

Current Word Count: 8,091

Random Excerpt:

As the chipper taxi driver sped off again, Molly climbed the steps leading to the front door and heard a faint clattering inside the house. She hesitantly slipped the key in the lock and crept into the foyer, where she set the cushion down by an orange umbrella rack and headed toward the clatter.

"Hello, is someone here already?"

As she neared the sounds, she noticed that they were coming from the kitchen, and appeared to be the product of a spoon and a coffee mug clanging together. The mug and spoon belonged to a short, dark haired man with wildly colored polo who had on a pair of headphones attached to his neon orange iPod looking device, and the man was dancing wildly while stirring his coffee and thrusting his butt back and forth all over the kitchen.

As Molly got closer, she could hear the faint sounds of one of Prince's earlier albums escaping the orange iPod-ish creature and she tried speaking louder to the very perky man with his sexy music and overly stirred coffee.

"SIR? CAN YOU HEAR ME? I appear to be your new roommate unless this is the wrong house, in which case, I'll need to run very quickly to catch the crazy cab driver who just dropped me off. My name is..."

Suddenly without absolutely no warning, the man ripped the ear buds from his ears and dropped his coffee and spoon, which crashed to the floor is very clanky mixture of steel and breaking ceramics, and he stared up at the ceiling for a moment.

Molly took one step forward, about to ask him whether he was okay and reach down to clean up some of the huge mess he's just made, when he suddenly jerked his head down and forward, so that he was looking directly at her with this look of absolute and amusing surprise.

The last thing he said before he disappeared with very strange sounding pop and a burst of sparkling light was this:

"OF COURSE!!"

And then it was very quiet in the house.

Passing on
me couch
[info]misfitmonkey
Last night, my grandfather passed away. It was fairly peaceful, I think, because hospice finally came in and he was on morphine and relaxers and my mother said that he just slowly drifted off once he could finally relax. I've taken off from internship and classes just to recharge and take it in... I don't really feel like talking to anyone today, and I didn't feel like going through the motions of yet another crazy, hectic, 15 hour day. I feel really strange and subdued... I think the services will be really hard, but I'm glad he's not in pain anymore.

Autumn brings a passing...
me couch
[info]misfitmonkey
My grandfather is at the end of a battle with cancer and many other things right now, and I found out Sunday night (and then confirmed for sure this morning) that he's not going to last much longer at all (days rather than previously used terms like weeks or months). I called this morning to tell my grandmother that I'm thinking of her and of him and to tell him this, and also tell him that I love him very much.

I feel a lot of things right now, about the time we lost through my estrangement from the family and about our special bond, despite a lack of blood relation (he's my adopted/step-grandfather), and right now, when I can't go be with him, the most important thing to remember for me right now is that very first time I went to see him after the several years away.

I walked on to the patio and when I touched his face and we kissed and hugged, he looked at me very clearly and said, "you and I never had a problem. we have always been okay."

It's that moment and the second visit when he reiterated that he and I were on track and that he was glad we were spending time together that help me to know right now that I don't need to have any regrets as he's getting ready to move on. I can let him go without rushing over and causing disruption, and I can allow him to go without feeling any resentment or anger or regret, because I know that he and I really are okay. The only sadness I have is because of his absence and because of his pain, and because he was a kindred spirit among a family of people to which I don't often relate.

Thanks to Kelley for talking with me when I feeling overwhelmed. She brought up the excellent point that I am capable of allowing all of my feelings and not shutting down, which is something that I haven't always been able to do. I'm glad I can go into this very sad time with an understanding of how I'm feeling, because five years ago I would've been catatonic and angry and shut down, and I'm so grateful for the personal growth.

Anyway. If you have a spare thought today, please hope for my grandfather's eventual peace and easy passing when it's time.

Reasons why today is the best day of them all
me couch
[info]misfitmonkey
There are several reasons why today has been stellar and superb:

1. My boss is on vacation and only called once this morning, so I have been feeling very uninhibited and happy in her absence (as has everyone else also).

2. Last night, I realized that I could write ONE journal article review and fulfill assignments for TWO different classes, so I've done my homework (aside from reading) for the next week and a half, which is a miracle from the heavens, because that hasn't happened in MONTHS.

3. I have a gallery show to go to tonight.

4. It's homecoming weekend at Mount Union, so tomorrow night I'll hopefully be hanging out with lots of college friends. :)

5. Tomorrow is the Nanowrimo Canton/Akron kickoff meeting and I put together awesome goodies and games and whatnot, so I can look forward to it all night while catching up on my TiVO-ness.

6. Tomorrow in the night, there will be an extra hour for me to sleep, which I am SERIOUSLY looking forward to.

7. I'm wearing my favorite shirt today.

8. My back only hurts minimally now, and I dared to wear my comfy shoes instead of the stupid adjusted shoes that are supposed to fix my scoliosis with this insert that makes my hips hurt a lot. Oh, and because I was having a lot of pain this morning, the department big cheese told me not to worry about cycle counting today (w00t!).

9. I talked to Simi today! :) I lub and miss her. :(

10. It's payday. Score.

Ohhhhhhh, the other night I blew all of my gold on my last Wildheart BoE item for Timshelyn:

Wildheart Gloves

The gloves of sweetness joined the other two Wildheart BoE's and other awesome things:
Wildheart Bracers
Wildheart Belt
Living Leggings
Firemoss Boots
Living Breastplate
Sergeant's Cape
Living Shoulders
Triune Amulet
Archaedic Stone of the Owl
Spire of Hakkar (*naner*)

Things I want to get rid of and upgrade:
Serpentskin Helm (it's nice, but green and there is undoubtedly something spiffier for me :) )
Woodseed Hoop (in general, I need better trinkets)

I'm close to level 56, and I've done BRD twice, but nothing beyond that. I have a lot to do before 60, but there's no rush.

Also, on a WoW-related note, I found a GREAT podcast that I love listening to on the way to work except that they haven't had a new episode since September and now I don't have anymore left to enjoy: Taverncast.

Oh, and it's Hallow's End, which is the super fun version of Halloween, where you can go trick-or-treating and get costumes and whatnot. Here's Timshelyn, decked in new gear and her mask (click on pic to see all my Flickr screenshots of Halloween-ish and guild stuff):

Oh oh! My warlock, Oralyx, turned into this weird little impish demon creature when she went trick-or-treating:

I'm still new to all the festivals on WoW, so I get all excited when a new one pops up. :) I can't wait until Christmas break, when I can unload, relax, kick back, and play a gazillion hours of WoW four days a week!

NaNoWriMo will now be NaNoFreMo (National Novel Frenzy Month)
me couch
[info]misfitmonkey
The reason I haven't mentioned Nanowrimo yet this year is because I haven't had time to.

In addition to planning my own novel, I am the Municipal Liaison for the Canton/Akron (OH) region for the fourth year, and I'm teaching Nanowrimo through my MSW internship with the Young Writers Program this year. I have five students with varying levels of developmental disabilities that are in my group at the clinic and about 10-15 people regularly attending the regional meetings every week, and I'm currently trying to get together all of the goody bags before this weekend's kickoff.

Amid all of my planning and internship and work and full time school and weekly meetups, I have only marginally planned my own novel, but I find that I work best under pressure, so perhaps this will be my best year since I'll be the most pressurized and lacking in time... One has to remain optimistic, right? ;) I plan to crack down hard on the novel planning this weekend for sure.

Anyway, I'm nano'ed to the hilt and have compiled some resources for anyone else who's getting ready for the big day. I might post a snippet or two on the ol' blog, but my guess is that my blogging will be even more infrequent than it has been with just school/internship/work. Pictures will be taken and some podcasting might be in the works though, so stay tuned for at least some imagery in November. :)

Personal Political Update
me couch
[info]misfitmonkey
I wanted to compile a list of who I'm voting for in the upcoming election, and I figure it makes good blog-content too. As most of you know, I'm a Green, and I live in the politically significant (and mostly conservative) state of Ohio, so I've begun to take voting very seriously in the past few years. This will be my first time feeling informed enough to vote in state elections (I've previously only voted in Presidential elections), and I've done a lot of looking before coming to the conclusions below (I stole Jen's format, because it's spiffy):

>> Governor: Bob Fitrakis is my pick, because he's a Green, he's got a strong woman running with him for Lt. Governor, and I just really like the guy. I like what I've read of his speeches, he says a lot of important things about campaign reform (which for me is a HUGE issue in Ohio, considering the events of the last Presidential election and electronic voting machines), and there's not ONE issue that I disagree with him on. Vote Fitrakis for Ohio Governor.

>> U.S. Senate: Sherrod Brown is the only option that isn't completely evil, in my opinion. Mike DeWine is so far up Bush's ass that you can't even see his shoes, and there is no worse fate for our state than seeing him put in office AGAIN. Vote Sherrod Brown for U.S. Senate.

>> District 16 House Representative: This race is between Ralph Regula and Thomas Shaw, and personally, I feel that Ralph Regula is right up there with DeWine, so I'm supporting Shaw. Vote Shaw for District 16 Representative.

Others:
>> State Senate, OH, 29th District:
Thomas West (D)
(only opponent is Republican)

>> State House of Reps, OH, 52nd District:
William Healy (D)
(only opponent is Republican)

>> Treasurer, OH:
Richard Cordray (D)
(only opponent is Republican)

>> Secretary of State, OH:
Timothy Kettler (Green)
(yay for two whole Green candidates!)

>> State Auditor, OH:
Barbara Sykes (D)
(only opponent is Republican, plus I really like this chick :) )

>> State Attorney General, OH:
Marc Dann (D)
(only opponent is Republican)

>> Supreme Court of Ohio:
Judge William O'Neill
(I like him. :) )

Ohio Ballot Measures:
>> Issue 2 - The Ohio Fair Minimum Wage Amendment: Raise the minimum wage? Fuck yes, we damn well should and it's about TIME. An excellent book on this subject and the myths about how our country would be affected by raising minimum wage can be found here, entitled "Ending Poverty As We Know It: Guaranteeing a Right to a Job at a Living Wage."

>> Issue 3 - Learn and Earn: This is to allow slot machines at seven race tracks in Ohio, and part of the profit will go toward college funding. A lot of people are making a stink about allowing gambling in Cleveland, but I say we're all adults and when the profits go to education, I'm all for it. Vote YES on Issue 3.

>> State Issue 4 (Smoke Less Ohio) & 5 (Smoke Free Ohio): This is one I feel strongly about, because I absolutely hate public smoking. Secondhand smoke is worse than first hand, I have a history of cancer in my family, and it's just plain disgusting. I think a person's individual rights should be checked when they are interfering with the health of those around them, and I shouldn't have to worry about going into a public place and being forced to endure someone else's cancerous fumes. Do it outside, do it at home, but keep the cancer sticks away from me. Everyone has a right to endanger themselves, but not others, and for me, the issue of smoking is an issue of endangering others. Vote NO on Issue 4 and YES on Issue 5.

So there you have it. Also, on a funny note, the man who sits in the cubicle next to me at work, Henry, is a diehard Republican, and I posted a huge sign on the wall of his cubicle today that said "OFFICE OF A NEWLY RECRUITED AND DEDICATED LIBERAL!" and had the ten values of the Green Party attached to it.

He about died of a heart attack and then came stomping over to my cubicle ranting about Roosevelt and social security and claiming that decentralization and feminism are fascist. We like to rib each other, so we both had a good laugh about it. I'll post a picture later from my camera phone. :)

Elaboration on auto mishap
me couch
[info]misfitmonkey
So, as I briefly mentioned yesterday, I crashed into a truck yesterday on my way to field practicum at 7:00. It was very slick, pitch black, and traffic was a nightmare, so when the truck very suddenly came to a complete stop in the four-lane freeway, I thought I had breaked in plenty of time until I hit some water and actually gained speed before slamming into to the back of this big white delivery truck.

My things went flying everywhere, my body slammed forward over the steering wheel, I had seatbelt burn for most of the day, and my neck wrenched forward. Right as I was getting ready to try and pull off to the side of the road and turn the car off, the truck just DROVE AWAY. I started waving my arms, but I couldn't into another lane to make myself visible to him, and everyone else on the road just kept driving.

It was the weirdest thing I've ever seen... I'm having a panic attack because the whole thing scared the living hell out of me, and everyone else is just continuing on their commute to work. I'm pretty sure I didn't even put a dent in the huge steel grill thing that I hit on the back of the truck, so I'm not sure the guy even realizes that I hit him, and despite hitting the guy pretty damn hard, I only have pushed in bumper and a big crack in the front of my Dakota.

I thought about calling and reporting the accident anyway, but I have liability coverage only, and I lost the truck in traffic. The only thing calling the police would've done would be adding points to my license and ... well, that's it. My insurance won't cover any damage to my car, and it was still running, so I just kept driving to field placement. I had some hefty whiplash going on, but I didn't go to a doctor and I stuck it out through field and then my six hours of classes, so when I got home at 11:00 at night, I was not feeling so hot, and now I've woken up feeling like fifty kinds of ASS.

So, I'm going to see a chiropractor for the first time in my life at 1:00 this afternoon. I've always wanted to see one for help with my scoliosis, and the accident seemed like a good time to buckle down and make the commitment, now that I have health coverage for a change.

I'm a little nervous. What if he breaks me???

Insert any adjective that would apply to a day that included the following:

1. Slamming into a huge truck on the freeway this morning, only to have the truck DRIVE AWAY (in spite of it being my fault) and leave me with whiplash and a panic attack. Bawling all the way to work is a very dramatic way to start the day. WHAT? ouch.

2. Being spit up on by a baby at a home visit during my field practicum today. WHAT? Yum.

3. Doing a search for "available data related to day and employment programs" and having this ONE search result come up: "The contribution of cigarette smoking to bladder cancer in women (pooled European data)" WHAT? Haha.

I find this to be very helpful to me right now... Thanks to Kelley for posting it. :)
Forgiveness Prayer

If I have harmed anyone, in any way, either knowingly or unknowingly through my own confusions, I ask forgiveness.

If anyone has harmed me, in any way, either knowingly or unknowingly through their own confusions, I forgive them.

And if there is a situation I am not yet ready to forgive, I forgive myself for that

For all the ways that I harm myself,
negate, doubt, belittle myself, judge or be unkind to myself through my own confusions,
I forgive myself.

---Buddhist Prayer

I have had a very long day, which will be following by many many long days to follow...

On a somewhat related note, my nearest Quaker meeting appears to have relocated and has the meeting house up for sale, and this makes me sad because now I can't find them. Not that I ever actually drag my ass to Meeting, but I take comfort in the mere availability of it.
